ChatGPT Video Editor
Turn a video-editing instruction into a timeline change. Open GPTVideoEditor to import a clip, ask for a trim, add timed text or change the framing, then review the result before exporting. Start with an MP4 or another supported video file and give the assistant clear time ranges. This guide also explains MOV, WebM and other format considerations so you can prepare your footage.
Your footage. A clearer cut.
Import your video in GPTVideoEditor, describe the timeline change and play it back before exporting.
- Import a clip
- Describe the cut
- Review and export
What is a ChatGPT video editor?
A ChatGPT video editor uses conversational instructions to help make supported edits to a video timeline. You describe a change, such as removing the first five seconds or adding a title for a specific interval. The useful result is a change you can inspect and play back, rather than a paragraph explaining how to edit.
GPTCleanup directs video-editing requests to GPTVideoEditor, our dedicated video site. Its workspace combines an assistant, media library, preview and timeline. Click the editor card to open it, then import your media there. This page does not upload footage or pass a video file through the referral link.
GPTVideoEditor is an independent product. The ChatGPT keyword describes an AI-assisted editing workflow; it does not mean ChatGPT itself supplies every editor function or that this page is an official OpenAI service. Available editing actions and models are shown in the destination workspace.
How to edit videos with AI instructions
Import a clip and play it before requesting a change. Note the sections you want to keep, the intended audience and the final aspect ratio. A talking-head clip for a vertical feed needs a different crop from a widescreen presentation recording.
Give the assistant an action and an exact range when timing matters. “Remove the opening five seconds” is more actionable than “make it faster.” When adding text, supply the exact words and the interval where they should appear. Work through a short sequence of edits so you can see which instruction caused each change.
After an edit, play through the join and listen to the audio. Check that the first and last words remain complete, that text stays on screen long enough to read and that reframing keeps the subject visible. Use the timeline to adjust a result that needs more precise timing before you export.
ChatGPT MP4 video editor: start with a compatible clip
An MP4 video editor works with a container that can hold different video and audio codecs. The .mp4 extension alone does not tell you whether a browser can decode the streams inside it. For broad compatibility, H.264 video with AAC audio in an MP4 container is a useful starting point.
Open an MP4 in GPTVideoEditor and confirm that the preview and sound both play correctly. If the video opens without sound, or import fails, inspect the codecs rather than repeatedly renaming the file. Export a compatible copy from your recording or conversion application and keep the original.
For a straightforward MP4 edit, first trim the unwanted lead-in, then check framing and any timed text. Export a short sample and review it in the player or publishing workflow you intend to use. That catches audio, crop and playback problems before you commit to a longer render.
ChatGPT MOV video editor and QuickTime recordings
MOV is a container commonly encountered in camera footage and QuickTime recordings. A MOV file may use codecs that your browser cannot decode. Import success depends on the actual streams and the browser, so a MOV extension is not a promise that every recording will open.
If your MOV clip will not import or preview, create an H.264/AAC MP4 copy with a suitable video conversion tool. Check the converted file’s orientation, colour, duration and sound before editing. Merely changing .mov to .mp4 does not transcode the video or solve a decoder mismatch.
Once the clip plays correctly, use the same editing workflow: identify the range, request a supported timeline change and review the cut. GPTVideoEditor offers MP4 and WebM export choices; do not plan on a MOV output solely because your source was a QuickTime file.
Edit WebM videos and choose MP4 or WebM export
WebM is another video container used on the web. As with MP4, decoding depends on the codecs and browser. Play the source in the editor and check its audio before building a sequence around it. If playback is incomplete, convert a copy to a format your browser handles.
GPTVideoEditor offers MP4 and WebM export. Choose based on where the finished video will be played or uploaded. When sharing with people who use different devices and players, test the exported file in the actual destination instead of assuming that a successful browser preview proves universal compatibility.
MKV, AVI and M4V searches raise the same container-versus-codec question. Browser support is not universal, and an import control is not a guarantee for every file. If a clip fails to open, prepare a compatible MP4 copy. This workflow does not promise MKV, AVI or MOV export.
Video editing prompts with clear time ranges
A useful video prompt defines a visible timeline action. Separate a trim, a title and a reframing request when you need to inspect each result. These are illustrative instructions to adapt after checking the duration and contents of your own clip.
Trim an unwanted introduction
Remove the first five seconds of this clip. Keep the remaining footage in its original order.
Play the new opening and confirm that the first spoken word is complete and the clip begins where you intended.
Add a timed title
Show the title “A simpler morning routine” from 00:00 to 00:03. Keep it clear of the speaker’s face.
Check the exact spelling, the title’s duration and its position at the final output size.
Reframe for a vertical post
Change the project to a 9:16 vertical layout and keep the speaker centred in the frame.
Watch the whole clip for movement outside the crop. A crop request does not imply automatic tracking of a moving subject.
Review the timeline before exporting your video
Check the entire edited sequence, including a few seconds on both sides of each cut. Pause cleanup can improve pace, but a deliberate pause may be part of the meaning. Listen for clipped words and unexpected silence. Confirm that music, speech and clip audio have the levels you intend.
Review the export settings and current media limits in the workspace. Previewing, asking for an edit and rendering a final file are different stages. Download the export, play it independently and check its duration, sound and framing before publishing. Keep the source files until you are satisfied with the delivered video.
ChatGPT Video Editor FAQ
Where do I upload my video?
Open gptvideoeditor.com using the editor card, then import your clip in GPTVideoEditor. This GPTCleanup page has no video upload, and the referral link does not carry your media files.
Can I edit an MP4 video with AI prompts?
Yes, for a clip the editor and your browser can decode. Import it in GPTVideoEditor, request supported timeline changes and review them. H.264 video with AAC audio in an MP4 container is a useful compatibility starting point.
Does the ChatGPT video editor accept MOV files?
A MOV file may work if its codecs can be decoded by your browser. Compatibility is not guaranteed for every MOV. If import fails, convert a copy to H.264/AAC MP4 and check the picture and audio before editing.
Can I export MP4 and WebM videos?
GPTVideoEditor offers MP4 and WebM export options. Review the available settings in the editor and test the exported file in the player or publishing destination where you plan to use it.
Will renaming an AVI or MKV file to MP4 make it work?
No. Changing an extension does not change the container or codecs. Use a suitable conversion tool to create a compatible copy if the original cannot be decoded.
Can I create new footage or remove objects with this workflow?
This page describes editing imported media through supported timeline actions. It does not promise video generation, object removal, automatic captions or every effect described in a prompt. Check the actions available in the editor.
Does my GPTCleanup plan include video editing?
The link opens a separate product. Check GPTVideoEditor for its account and usage options; a GPTCleanup plan does not automatically grant video-editing credits or a subscription there.
