01 · Submissions

Literary magazines are the strictest venues there are.

Every other page on this site describes a platform that permits AI writing with conditions — disclose it, forgo the paywall, accept a lower distribution tier. Literary publishing is different, and poets should know it before they use any tool at all.

Clarkesworld's submission guidelines prohibit AI in the writing, editing, or publishing process. Editing is named. Its editor, Neil Clarke, has described such submissions as “the fruit of a poisoned tree”. Its artwork guidelines exclude AI and AI-assisted work outright.

The context explains the severity. In February 2023 the magazine was flooded with generated submissions, closed to new work temporarily, and banned more than five hundred accounts. That experience shaped a lot of editorial policy across the field, and many venues now ask directly.

So: running a poem you wrote entirely yourself through this tool would breach that policy. We would rather say that plainly than sell you something that quietly costs you a submission. Read the guidelines of anywhere you send work, and where they ask, answer honestly — the question exists precisely because detection does not work on poetry.

02 · Detection

Scores on poems are noise.

Poetry is the form where AI detection is least reliable, and it fails in both directions at once.

Fixed forms are regular by design. A sonnet in strict iambic pentameter is exactly the kind of predictable text these tools read as machine-made, so a technically accomplished human poem scores high. Free verse runs the other way — deliberately irregular, which reads as human whoever or whatever produced it, so generated free verse passes easily.

Which means a detector result on a poem tells you almost nothing, and anyone making a decision from one is doing so on noise. That is worth knowing if you are ever accused, and worth remembering before you pay anything for a score.

03 · The marks

What actually gives generated verse away.

Read the rhyme words in a column and you will catch the first one in seconds.

  • Lines that exist to reach the rhymeThe clearest tell in metrical AI verse. A model picks a rhyme and then builds a line backwards to arrive at it, so the second line of every couplet says something the poem did not need. Read the rhyme words alone: if they are the most predictable partner for each other — heart and apart, fire and desire — the poem was assembled from the ends inward.
  • Metre with no variation at allHuman metrical writing substitutes constantly — a trochee at the head of an iambic line, an extra unstressed syllable to slow a phrase. Generated verse holds the pattern exactly, because the pattern is the target. Perfectly regular metre reads as a metronome rather than as a voice, and it is the most audible difference when read aloud.
  • Feelings named instead of shownSorrow, longing, hope, silence, eternity. Generated poems reach for abstractions because abstraction is the average of what poems talk about. Poetry works the other way: the particular object, and the feeling left for the reader to supply. Any line naming an emotion is a line worth suspecting.
  • A poem about nothing that happenedGenerated verse addresses a subject — grief, the sea, autumn — rather than an occasion. Poems that land come from a specific afternoon, a particular person, a thing that was said. A model has no afternoons, so it writes about the category.
  • Images from the shared stockMoonlight, shattered glass, wilting roses, a bird taking flight. These are the images that appear most often in the poetry a model learned from, so they are the ones it produces. Not wrong, and entirely used up. One image nobody else would have thought of is worth the whole poem.
  • An ending that ties the poem offGenerated poems land on a summarising final line that resolves the feeling. Contemporary poetry usually does the opposite — ending on the concrete, or on the unresolved, and trusting the reader. A closing couplet that explains the poem is the most common single fault.
04 · What this does

Being straight about the limits.

It has no ear. It cannot hear a line, cannot tell whether a substitution works, and cannot check that a sonnet scans. Poetry is the form where a tool helps least and a reader helps most, and we would rather you read this poem to somebody than paste it here.

What it does usefully is catch habits: the named emotion where an image belongs, the exhausted stock image, the closing line that explains the poem. Those are worth seeing in your own drafts, and after a few you stop needing to be told.

And it will not make a poem good. Poems come from occasions — a particular afternoon, a particular person, something that was actually said. A model has none of those, which is the whole of why generated verse reads as though it is about poetry rather than about anything.

If you write songs rather than poems, the lyrics humanizer covers what changes when words are sung against a rhythm that already exists — including why a lyric that scans on the page can be unsingable.

For prose fiction, the fanfiction humanizer sets out the narrative equivalents of these faults: feelings announced rather than shown, and scenes given identical weight.

And if you are submitting anywhere, the zero-width space remover clears the invisible characters a document collects — worth running before a submission for the same reason you would proofread it.

06 · Questions

Poetry humanizer questions.

Can I use GPTCleanup Poetry Humanizer for professional poetry submissions?

You need to check the venue first, and many will say no. Clarkesworld's guidelines prohibit AI in the writing, editing or publishing process — editing is named explicitly — so using this tool on a poem you wrote entirely yourself would still breach their policy. That is unusual strictness, and it is not unique to them. Read the guidelines of anywhere you submit.

Do literary magazines ban AI in poetry submissions?

Many do, and several go further than any platform covered elsewhere on this site. Clarkesworld's editor has described AI submissions as "the fruit of a poisoned tree"; the magazine was flooded in February 2023, temporarily closed submissions and banned more than 500 accounts. Its artwork guidelines exclude AI and AI-assisted work outright.

Can I use an AI poetry rewriter to pass AI detection?

We do not promise detector outcomes, and on poetry a score means almost nothing in either direction. Fixed forms are regular by design and read as generated; free verse is irregular enough to pass whoever wrote it. A detector result on a poem is noise.

How to avoid AI detection for creative writing?

Detection performs worst on creative writing of any kind, so the practical answer is that nobody should be making decisions from those scores. Where a submission venue asks about AI use, the question is one of honesty rather than evasion, and several venues ask precisely because detection does not work.

What is a poetry humanizer?

A tool that reworks verse so it reads as written rather than produced. Its honest scope here is narrower than most: it can flag rhyme-driven lines, mechanical metre and abstraction, and it has no ear. Poetry is the form where a tool helps least and a reader helps most.

How can I make AI poetry sound more human?

Replace one abstraction with one object. Then break the metre somewhere deliberately, and change the last line so it stops explaining the poem. Those three edits address the three commonest faults.

Why does AI poetry often feel soulless?

Because nothing happened to anybody. Generated poems are about subjects rather than occasions, and poetry is an art of the particular — this room, this afternoon, this thing that was said. Abstraction is what a model has instead of a life.

How do I fix robotic sounding AI poems?

Read the rhyme words in a column. If each is the most predictable partner for the one above, the poem was built from its endings inward and the lines are serving the rhymes. Rewriting the lines while keeping the rhymes will not fix it; change the rhymes.

How do I fix the meter in AI poetry?

Usually by breaking it. Generated metre is too regular rather than too loose — human metrical verse substitutes constantly, and those substitutions are where the voice lives. A perfectly regular line is the problem, not the goal.

Can the GPTCleanup Poetry Humanizer improve rhyme schemes?

It can flag predictable pairings. What it cannot do is find the surprising rhyme, which is the whole skill — near rhyme, internal rhyme, and rhymes that arrive where the reader does not expect them.

How to make ChatGPT poems less generic?

Give the poem an occasion. Not grief but the specific Tuesday; not the sea but the particular beach and what was in your pocket. Generic is a content problem and no amount of rewriting reaches it.

Is there a way to humanize AI verses for free?

The scan here is free. The free method that works better is reading the poem aloud to somebody — poetry is an oral form and its faults are audible in a way they are not visible.

How to use a poetry humanizer effectively?

As a diagnostic on your own drafts rather than as a finisher on generated ones. Seeing which lines get flagged for abstraction teaches you a habit you then stop having, which is worth more than any single rewrite.

Does humanizing poetry help with creative writing assignments?

Your institution's rules apply to the finished work whatever touched it, and creative writing programmes have been among the quickest to write specific policies. Read yours — several treat editing tools differently from generation, and some do not.

What is the difference between an AI rewriter and a poetry humanizer?

Marketing, mostly. What matters is whether a tool changes words or changes structure, and in poetry neither is really the unit — the line is, and its relationship to the line below it.

How to remove AI watermarks from my poems?

Text watermarking in the sense people mean — a hidden signal identifying a model — is not something the major assistants have deployed in text. What is genuinely present is invisible characters carried in from copying, and those are worth clearing before submission for their own reasons.

Can GPTCleanup Poetry Humanizer handle different poem styles?

It reads them, and its usefulness varies sharply. On free verse the abstraction and stock-image flags are genuinely helpful. On fixed forms it has no ability to check that a sonnet scans, and you should not rely on it for that.

How can I improve the flow of my AI-generated lyrics?

Lyrics and poems fail differently because lyrics are sung against a rhythm that already exists. The lyrics page covers that in detail — most notably that a lyric which scans perfectly on the page often sits wrong on the beat.

Is it possible to make AI poems sound more emotional?

By removing the emotion words. A poem that names sorrow gives the reader nothing to do; a poem that describes the coat still on the hook produces the feeling itself. This is the oldest advice in the form and generated verse breaks it constantly.

What are the benefits of using a poem rewriter?

Modest and worth being honest about. It catches habits. It does not have an ear, cannot hear a line, and has no opinion worth having about whether a poem is any good.

How to make AI poetry sound more like a specific author?

Identify what that poet does that others do not — line length, where they break, what they refuse to say — and apply those deliberately. Asking a model to imitate a poet produces an average of everything written about that poet's style.

Is there an AI tool that can write and humanize poems?

Plenty will write them. We would separate the questions: if a model wrote the poem, the honest description of that poem is that a model wrote it, and no amount of subsequent editing changes what it is for a venue that asks.

How to add more depth to AI-generated verses?

Depth in poetry comes from two things held at once — the poem meaning something it does not say. Generated verse says one thing clearly. That is a structural absence rather than a wording problem.

Does GPTCleanup Poetry Humanizer work for non-English poetry?

It reads other languages, and the named phrase list behind the check is written for English, so it is weakest exactly where poetry is most language-specific. For non-English verse the flags are worth less than usual.

How to make AI poetry sound more personal and authentic?

Put a proper noun in it. A place name, a real object, somebody's actual words. Generated poems avoid particulars because particulars are unpredictable, and particulars are the entire difference.

Can I humanize poems for social media posts?

Yes, and the register there is different — short-form poetry online rewards immediacy and a strong last line. Worth noting that Instagram-style poetry is one of the most imitated styles in any model's training data, so generated output in that mode is especially uniform.

Why is GPTCleanup Poetry Humanizer better than ChatGPT for poems?

Asking a model to make its own poem better usually produces the same poem with more adjectives. This flags named faults instead, and tells you what it found rather than handing back a different poem.

How to use an AI poetry humanizer for school projects?

Check your school's policy first, because they vary and creative work is often treated more strictly than essays. Where editing tools are permitted, using one on your own poem is ordinary; where they are not, it is not.

Can I use GPTCleanup Poetry Humanizer for greeting card messages?

Yes, and this is one of the few places where the stock images are fine. Greeting cards are a form built on shared sentiment, and a surprising image is often the wrong choice.

How to make AI poetry sound more creative?

Creativity in verse is mostly juxtaposition — two things placed together that do not belong. Models avoid that because incongruity is improbable, which is precisely why generated poems feel safe.

What is the most reliable AI poem humanizer?

Reliability here means not flattening what makes a poem yours. Test any tool on a poem you like: if it regularises the metre and replaces the odd word, it will do that to everything.

How to improve the vocabulary of AI poems?

Usually by simplifying it. Generated verse reaches for elevated diction — ethereal, resplendent, myriad — because that vocabulary is over-represented in the poetry corpus. Plain words in a strange order do more.

Is GPTCleanup Poetry Humanizer safe for academic use?

Your text stays yours and is not used to train anything. Whether the tool is permitted in your programme is a separate question, and one worth asking directly rather than assuming — several creative writing programmes prohibit editing tools as well as generation.

How to make AI haikus sound more authentic?

Haiku is where generated verse fails most visibly. It counts syllables and misses the form entirely — the seasonal reference, the cut between two images, the absence of a stated conclusion. A syllabically correct haiku that explains itself is not one.

Can I use a poetry humanizer for songwriting?

The forms differ more than they look. A lyric is written against a melody and a beat, so lines that scan on the page can be unsingable. The lyrics page covers what changes.

How to edit AI poems for better flow?

Look at the line breaks, which generated poetry treats as punctuation. A break should do something — hold a word back, create a second meaning that the next line cancels. Breaks that land on grammatical pauses are doing nothing.

Is there an AI poetry humanizer online for free?

The scan here is free for 10 scans a day of up to 3,000 words each, and hidden-character cleanup is free with no limits. Phrase suggestions and full rewriting are on a paid plan.

Can GPTCleanup Poetry Humanizer handle long-form poems?

It handles long documents. Long poems fail differently — they lose their thread rather than their line — and that is a structural judgement the tool does not make.

How to avoid repetitive phrases in AI poetry?

Generated verse cycles a small stock of images and gestures across a set of poems, which is invisible in one and obvious in ten. Read a batch together and cut whatever appears twice.

Does humanizing poetry help with SEO?

Almost irrelevant here. Poetry pages rank on the poem being sought by name rather than on prose signals, and optimising a poem for search is a good way to ruin it.

Can GPTCleanup Poetry Humanizer fix bad metaphors?

It can flag exhausted ones — the shared stock of moonlight and shattered glass. Whether a fresh metaphor works is a judgement about meaning, and no tool makes it.

Does GPTCleanup Poetry Humanizer offer a free trial?

The scan and character cleanup are free permanently rather than as a trial. The paid plan covers phrase suggestions and full-document rewriting.

How do I know if a poem was written by AI?

Not from a detector, which is unreliable on verse in both directions. Read the rhyme words in a column, look for named emotions, and check whether anything in the poem could only have happened to one person. Those three tell you more than any score.
