01 · The marks

What makes fiction read as generated.

Not the essay tells. Generated fiction gives itself away differently, and one of these is specific to fanfiction in a way that matters more than the rest.

  • Feelings announced instead of shownShe felt a wave of sadness wash over her. Generated fiction reports emotion rather than staging it, because reporting is the safer completion. It is the single most common tell in AI fanfic, and the fix is always the same: cut the sentence naming the feeling and keep whatever the character did next.
  • Every character speaking in one voiceThe fatal one for fanfiction specifically, because character voice is the entire product. Generated dialogue gives everyone complete sentences, the same register and the same rhythm. Nobody interrupts, nobody trails off, nobody is bad at saying what they mean — which is most of how people actually talk, and all of how a character becomes recognisable.
  • Every scene weighted the sameA model distributes attention evenly, so a first kiss and a walk to the shops get the same number of sentences. Human fiction is lopsided on purpose: it lingers where it cares and skips a week in a clause. Even pacing is why generated chapters read like a synopsis of themselves.
  • The five-senses inventoryThe air smelled of rain, distant traffic hummed, the fabric was rough beneath her fingers. Sensory detail arriving as a complete set rather than as the one thing a person in that moment would actually register. Keep the single detail that only this character would notice and delete the audit.
  • Dialogue that only moves the plotEvery line does a job and nothing else — conveying information, confirming a decision, advancing to the next beat. Real dialogue is mostly subtext, evasion and people talking past each other. If every exchange in a scene is load-bearing, the scene was assembled rather than written.
  • The chapter that explains itself at the endA closing paragraph telling you what the chapter meant and what it changed for the characters. Generated fiction reliably lands the moral, because the shape of a conclusion is easy to produce. Fiction that trusts its reader stops a beat earlier.
02 · The accusations

What the evidence was actually worth.

Since 2023 AO3 has had recurring waves of readers accusing writers of using AI, including on works posted before the tools they were accused of using existed. In October 2023 writers were locking their accounts over it. The pattern is now familiar: a work reads too smoothly, a comment says so, and the writer spends a week defending a draft they wrote by hand.

In June 2026 an anonymous group circulated a twenty-five page document naming around thirty writers, and harassment followed. It is worth looking at what its evidence was, because it is the only technically checkable claim anyone in these waves has made.

The document rested on a single artifact: font-claude-response-body, a CSS class Claude attaches to its output, which survives a copy-paste into some editors including AO3's. That is real. It is also, on its own authors' account, close to useless as proof. Pasting through Word or Google Docs strips it, so its absence shows nothing. Only Claude leaves it, so other models leave no trace at all. And it marks paragraphs rather than works — six instances in a 263,627-word fic were treated the same as thirteen hundred in a short one. The document opened by claiming undeniable proof of AI content and had narrowed to proof of Claude usage for specific sentences by page four.

We say this as the people who build the scan that reads exactly this kind of residue: paste residue evidences a paste, not authorship. It can tell you text passed through an application. It cannot tell you who wrote the story, how much of it, or whether the writer typed every word around it. Anyone presenting it as more than that is overreaching, whatever their intentions.

03 · The rules

AO3 does not ban AI-generated works.

This is worth stating flatly, because a great deal of the anxiety on this search is about a rule that does not exist. AO3's Terms of Service permit fanworks made fully or partly with AI tools, provided they qualify as fanworks. In November 2024 the Organization for Transformative Works confirmed it would neither implement a ban nor require a mandatory disclosure tag.

What it does instead is encourage voluntary tagging — Created Using Generative AI, AI-Generated Text — so readers who want to filter that content can. The reasoning follows from the archive's purpose: it exists to preserve fanworks broadly rather than to judge which ones deserve preserving.

Two things that can get you actioned there, and are worth not confusing with an AI rule. Anti-spam policy still applies, so posting a large number of works in a short window is a problem whoever or whatever wrote them. And the OTW's own position on AI is not permissive in every direction: it has taken measures against large-scale scraping of the archive and sought exclusion from datasets used to train these models. Permitting fans to use the tools and objecting to fic being harvested to build them are not in tension.

Other archives set their own rules. Read the one you post to rather than assuming AO3's position generalises.

04 · If you are accused

A rewrite is the wrong defence.

The instinct is to rewrite the chapter until it stops reading as generated. It is the wrong move, and not only because it concedes the point. Clean, even, competent prose is what reads as AI to both detectors and readers — so the writers most often accused are polished ones, people writing in a second language, and anyone whose work has been through a beta. Rewriting toward suspicion makes your prose worse and settles nothing.

What holds up is provenance. Drafts with a history. Notes. A document with version history showing the thing being built. A beta who read chapter four in March. None of that is glamorous and all of it is more persuasive than any score, because it is evidence of the process rather than an argument about the product.

The one technical thing worth doing is clearing invisible characters before you post — not to hide anything, but because they are the only checkable artifact in this whole argument and they arrive by accident. Text that has been through a chat window, a phone keyboard and a document editor collects them at every step, and they mean nothing about who wrote it.

05 · What this does

Being straight about the limits.

It reads prose. It has not read your canon, does not know your characters, and cannot tell you whether a line sounds like them — which is the only question that really matters in fanfiction. Everything fandom-specific stays with you.

It will not make your writing good. It finds the constructions that make fiction read as machine-made and clears the residue that came in with a paste. What makes a fic worth reading is having something particular to say about these people, and no tool has ever supplied that.

And it does not promise a detector outcome, here or anywhere else on this site. On AO3 there is no detector to beat. Where readers are the detector, no rewrite reliably changes their mind — which is the honest answer, and the reason the rest of this page is about evidence rather than evasion.

06 · Related

Before you post.

The one pass worth running last is the character-level one. The zero-width space remover finds what travelled in with your text — invisible on screen, and the only artifact in the whole accusation argument that anybody can actually check.

For the general approach to prose rhythm and structure, the AI humanizer covers it outside a fiction context, and the AI detector explains what these tools measure and why they disagree with each other so much — worth reading before you take any score seriously, including one someone else ran on your work.

If your draft came out of a chat window, the Claude watermark cleaner deals with what Claude specifically leaves behind, which is the residue the June 2026 document was built on.

07 · Questions

Fanfiction humanizer questions.

What is the best Fanfiction Humanizer?

The one that fixes prose without flattening voice, because voice is the whole point of fanfiction. Be wary of anything selling a detector score: the tools promising that on this SERP have no way to control the outcome, and on AO3 specifically there is no detector to beat.

How do I make AI fanfiction sound more human?

Cut every sentence that names an emotion and keep what the character did instead. Then break the dialogue: let someone interrupt, let someone answer a different question than the one asked. Those two passes do more than any rewriting tool.

Can I use GPTCleanup Fanfiction Humanizer for AO3 stories?

Yes, and worth knowing the actual rule: AO3 does not ban works made with AI. Its Terms of Service permit them as fanworks, and in November 2024 the OTW confirmed it would neither ban them nor require a disclosure tag. It encourages voluntary tags like Created Using Generative AI so readers can filter.

Does the GPTCleanup Fanfiction Humanizer help with character voice?

It flags where voice has collapsed — everyone speaking in the same register with the same sentence length — which is the failure that matters most in fanfic. Restoring a specific character's voice is yours to do, because it depends on canon a tool has not read.

Is there a free AI humanizer for fanfic?

This is free. Judge any free tool on whether it leaves your voice alone: a rewrite that normalises prose toward correctness will strip exactly the quirks that make a fic yours.

How to bypass AI detection on Wattpad?

We are not going to give you a method, and in this case the premise is worth checking too. Wattpad has not deployed a public AI detector on uploads. What actually gets fic writers into trouble is other readers deciding a work reads as generated, which no rewrite reliably prevents.

Why does AI fanfiction sound repetitive?

Because a model picks each phrase from the likeliest options, and the likeliest description of a smile is the same one every time. It also cycles a small set of gestures — jaw tightening, breath catching, a hand running through hair — until a reader starts counting them.

Can GPTCleanup Fanfiction Humanizer rewrite smut or romance?

It will work on romance and explicit fic like any other prose. The usual problem in generated scenes is the same as everywhere else, more visible: emotion reported rather than shown, and a beat-by-beat evenness that removes all tension.

What is an AI fanfiction rewriter?

A tool that reworks fanfic prose. Rewriting and humanizing get used interchangeably and are not quite the same job: a rewriter changes sentences, while the thing that marks generated fiction is structure — pacing, voice, stated interiority — which survives most sentence-level changes.

How to improve dialogue in AI-generated fanfic?

Give one character a verbal habit and let another lack one. Cut every line that exists only to convey information. Let at least one exchange fail, where somebody does not say the thing. Generated dialogue is uniformly competent, and competence is what makes it sound synthetic.

Is GPTCleanup Fanfiction Humanizer safe for my privacy?

Your text is attached to your account, deletable by you, and not used to train anything. Given how much of this community's anger is about works being scraped for training, that is worth stating plainly: nothing you paste here trains a model.

Can I use a fanfiction rewriter for original fiction?

Yes — nothing here is fandom-specific. The marks of generated prose are the same in original work: feelings announced, scenes evenly weighted, everyone speaking alike.

Does GPTCleanup Fanfiction Humanizer work for Harry Potter fanfic?

It works on any fandom's prose, and it knows nothing about any canon. Britpicking, character consistency and whether a line sounds like the character are yours — a rewrite cannot check them.

How to remove AI patterns from fanfiction?

Structurally: cut announced emotions, unbalance the pacing, differentiate the dialogue, delete the closing paragraph that explains the chapter. At character level: clear the invisible characters that came in from the chat window, which survive every rewrite.

Is there an AI humanizer for fanfic writers?

This is one, and it is worth being clear about what fic writers mostly need it for. Two groups arrive here: people polishing a draft, and people who have been accused and want to know what in their prose triggered it. The second group is larger than the tools admit.

Can GPTCleanup Fanfiction Humanizer fix pacing issues?

It can flag even pacing, which is the generated-fiction signature — every scene the same length regardless of weight. Deciding which scene deserves room is an authorial call, and the tool will not make it for you.

How to make AI fanfic more emotional?

Counter-intuitively, by removing the emotion words. Generated fiction is flat precisely because it names feelings; a reader feels something when they are shown the evidence and left to draw it. Cut the naming sentence and trust the gesture underneath it.

What is the most reliable fanfic humanizer?

Reliability here means not damaging what it touches. The test: paste a passage you are proud of and see whether the rewrite keeps its oddities. If it smooths them into competent neutral prose, it will do that to everything.

Can I use GPTCleanup Fanfiction Humanizer for scriptwriting?

It works on script prose, though the dialogue notes matter more there. Read anything it returns aloud — a script that reads fine silently is often unsayable, which is the failure a page-based tool cannot see.

Does GPTCleanup Fanfiction Humanizer support multiple languages?

It reads other languages, and the named phrase list behind the check was written for English, so results are strongest there. We publish per-language pages for the major ones rather than claiming even coverage across a hundred.

How to avoid being banned on fanfiction sites for AI?

On AO3 the premise does not hold: AI-assisted works are permitted, and the OTW confirmed in 2024 it would not ban them or require disclosure. What can still get you actioned there is anti-spam — posting a large number of works in a short window. Other archives set their own rules, so read the one you post to.

What makes GPTCleanup Fanfiction Humanizer different from ChatGPT?

Asking a model to make its own prose sound human returns the same prose with different words, because the register is its default. This works from a named list of constructions instead, and shows you what it found rather than quietly replacing your chapter.

Can GPTCleanup Fanfiction Humanizer help with world-building?

Not really, and that is worth saying rather than implying otherwise. It works on how prose reads. World-building is invention, and a tool that invented details for you would be adding exactly the unverifiable specifics we tell people to distrust.

How to use a fanfic humanizer effectively?

One chapter at a time, and read the output against the original rather than accepting it. The most valuable use is diagnostic: seeing which passages get flagged teaches you the habits, and after a few chapters you stop needing the tool.

Is GPTCleanup Fanfiction Humanizer good for anime fanfiction?

It works on the prose regardless of fandom. Anime fic often carries transliterated honorifics and Japanese terms — those are left alone rather than normalised, because normalising them would break the register the fandom expects.

Can I rewrite an entire chapter with GPTCleanup Fanfiction Humanizer?

Yes, and a chapter is roughly the right unit — long enough for pacing problems to be visible, short enough to read the result properly. Rewriting a whole fic unread is how a continuity error gets published under your name.

Does GPTCleanup Fanfiction Humanizer understand fandom tropes?

No. It has not read your canon, does not know what a coffee shop AU is meant to do, and cannot tell whether a trope has been executed well. It reads prose. Everything fandom-specific is yours.

How to get better descriptions in AI fanfic?

Delete four fifths of them. Generated description arrives as an inventory of the setting; a reader needs the one detail that this character, in this state, would actually notice. Specific and singular beats complete every time.

Is GPTCleanup Fanfiction Humanizer worth the price?

The scan is free. Hidden-character cleanup is free with no limits; phrase-level suggestions and full rewriting sit on a paid plan, which is what keeps the character tools free.

Can GPTCleanup Fanfiction Humanizer help with writer's block?

Not directly — it works on text that exists. What some writers find is that reading the flagged patterns in an old chapter gives them something concrete to fix, which is easier to start than a blank page.

How to make AI fanfiction less formal?

Contractions everywhere, sentence fragments, and let the narration take on the character's vocabulary rather than a neutral one. Generated prose defaults to a register slightly more formal than any fic actually needs.

Does GPTCleanup Fanfiction Humanizer maintain story consistency?

It preserves names, facts and quoted material, and it cannot check continuity against your other chapters. If a rewrite touches a detail established twelve chapters ago, only you will catch it.

Is there a fanfiction humanizer for mobile?

It runs in a browser on any device. Pasting from a phone or a notes app frequently brings invisible characters along, which the scan reports separately.

How to bypass Winston AI for fanfiction?

We will not give you a method. Worth noting that Winston is a paid detector aimed at people commissioning content — it is not something fanfiction archives run, so if it is being used on your fic, someone chose to point it there.

Can GPTCleanup Fanfiction Humanizer handle dark themes?

It processes the text without moralising about content. What it will not do is write the material for you: it works on prose you already have.

Why is my fanfiction getting flagged as AI?

Often for reasons that have nothing to do with how you wrote it. Clean, even, competent prose reads as generated to both detectors and readers — so polished writing, translated writing and writing by non-native English speakers all get accused disproportionately. That is a real and documented unfairness in this community.

How to polish fanfiction drafts with AI?

Use it to find, not to replace. Let it flag the announced emotions and the flat dialogue, then fix those yourself in your own voice. A draft that has been auto-polished end to end usually reads more generated than it did before.

Does GPTCleanup Fanfiction Humanizer offer a trial?

The scan and the hidden-character cleanup are free to use, with no trial period to run out. The paid plan covers phrase suggestions and full-document rewriting.

Can GPTCleanup Fanfiction Humanizer improve prose quality?

It can remove what makes prose read as machine-made, which is not the same as making it good. Good comes from having something particular to say about these characters — the part no tool supplies.

What is the best AI rewriter for Archive of Our Own?

AO3 is a posting archive rather than an editor, so the question is really which tool to use before you paste. Whichever you choose, run a hidden-character pass last: text moved between a chat window, a document editor and the AO3 rich text box picks up invisible characters at every step.

How to make AI fanfic sound more like a specific author?

Identify what that author does that others do not — sentence length, where they place the emotional beat, what they refuse to describe — and apply those deliberately. Asking a model to imitate a style produces an average of everything it has read under that description.

Is GPTCleanup Fanfiction Humanizer easy to use?

Paste a chapter and read what comes back. The output is a list of passages with reasons rather than a score, which takes longer to read and tells you something you can act on.

Can I use GPTCleanup Fanfiction Humanizer for fan theories?

It works on any prose including meta and theory posts. It will not check whether your theory holds up against canon.

How to humanize fanfiction for Tumblr?

Tumblr prose runs shorter and much more informal than archive prose, so the main edit is cutting and loosening. Paste residue matters more here than most places, because text tends to arrive via several apps before it gets posted.

Does GPTCleanup Fanfiction Humanizer support long-form content?

It handles long documents, and a chapter at a time is still the better habit. Voice drift across a long work is exactly what a writer stops noticing on the third read and what a fresh pass catches.

How can I rewrite my fanfic to make it sound more professional?

Be careful what you are asking for. Professional usually means smoother, and smooth is the direction that reads as generated. What actually improves fic is sharper specificity and stronger voice, both of which are less polished rather than more.

Can I use an AI to rewrite fanfiction without losing my voice?

Only if you check. Voice lives in the things a rewrite treats as errors: the run-on you meant, the repeated word, the fragment. Rewrite a paragraph at a time and reject anything that made you sound more correct and less like yourself.

Can I change the point of view in my story using a rewriter?

A POV change is more than a pronoun swap — it changes what the narrator can know, which usually means whole passages have to go rather than be converted. Expect to do the thinking yourself and use the tool for the sentence-level work afterwards.

How do I rewrite a fanfic story to change the tense?

Tense conversion is the one mechanical rewrite that works well, since it is a systematic transformation. The thing to check afterwards is the sequence of tenses in flashbacks, which is where automated conversion reliably goes wrong.

How to rewrite fanfiction and maintain canon consistency?

No tool can help here, and one that claimed to would be inventing. It has not read your canon. Keep your own reference notes and check the rewrite against them — names, dates, established facts and anything a previous chapter committed you to.

Is there a fanfiction rewriter that helps with 'show don't tell'?

This flags the announced-emotion pattern, which is show-don't-tell stated in specific terms rather than as advice. What it flags is the sentence naming the feeling; the showing has to come from you, because it depends on knowing the character.

Can I rewrite fanfiction to fix plot holes?

No. A plot hole is a problem in the story's logic, not in its sentences, and a tool that patched one would be inventing events. Rewriting can only make a hole better written.

What is the best way to rewrite fanfiction dialogue tags?

Mostly by deleting them. Generated fic reaches for elaborate tags — she interjected, he countered — where said would disappear properly. Keep said, cut the adverbs, and let the line itself carry the tone.

How to rewrite fanfiction summaries to get more clicks?

Summaries work on specificity and on a question the reader wants answered, not on adjectives. Generated summaries describe the genre rather than the story — enemies-to-lovers with angst rather than the particular thing that happens in chapter one.

How to rewrite a fanfiction chapter to be longer?

Adding length is usually the wrong instinct, and it is the one AI does most eagerly — padding with description and restated emotion. If a chapter genuinely needs more, it needs another scene, which is writing rather than rewriting.

How to rewrite fanfiction to improve the opening hook?

Start later than you think. Generated openings and first drafts share a habit of establishing the setting and the mood before anything happens. Cut until the first line contains a person doing something, and let the context arrive afterwards.
