AI Paraphraser
A free paraphrasing tool with no sign-up. Paste a passage and get it rephrased for clarity, for register or for length, with the sentence structure genuinely changed rather than the vocabulary swapped for near-synonyms. Every fact, figure, name and quotation comes through as written, and we are straight further down about what paraphrasing does not do for plagiarism or for AI detection.
Four things people mean by paraphrase, and they are not the same job.
Worth deciding which one you want before you start, because the versions that come back look similar and only one of them is what you needed.
- Say the same thing more clearlyThe most common request and the least dramatic. Sentence order changes, subordinate clauses get promoted or cut, and the point arrives earlier. Vocabulary mostly stays, because the problem was rarely the words. This is the mode that improves a draft rather than merely differing from it.
- Change the registerThe same content pitched formally or informally: an email that needs to sound less stiff, or a forum answer that needs to survive being quoted in a report. Register lives in sentence length and connective choice far more than in vocabulary, which is why swapping words for longer synonyms produces something that reads as pompous rather than as formal.
- Say it in fewer wordsCutting is the paraphrase people most often want and least often ask for. Hedges, redundant pairs, and the sentence that restates the previous one all come out, and the meaning survives intact because none of them were carrying any.
- Say it differently on purposeRewording to avoid repeating a phrase you have already used, or to put a quoted passage into your own words. This is the mode with the most ways to go wrong, and the section below on academic use is about exactly that.
How to tell a real AI paraphraser from a synonym swapper.
- Synonym swapping is not paraphrasingThe oldest trick in this category and still the most common: replace every third word with a thesaurus entry and call the result rewritten. It produces prose nobody would write, because the substitutes are near-synonyms rather than synonyms. Utilise for use, individuals for people, commence for start. A reader spots it immediately and so does a marker.
- The meaning has to survive intactEvery fact, figure, name, date and quotation comes through as written. This sounds obvious and is the single most common failure in the category, because a tool optimising for difference from the input will eventually change something that mattered. Read the result against the original when anything depends on it.
- Sentence structure has to actually changeA real paraphrase varies the shape, not only the vocabulary: clauses reordered, two sentences merged, one split. If the rewritten version maps word-for-word onto the original with different nouns, nothing has been paraphrased. It has been disguised, which is a different and worse thing.
- Your voice should still be recognisableParaphrasing a whole document through any tool tends to converge on the same neutral register, because that register is the average of everything the model read. Doing it paragraph by paragraph, and rejecting the suggestions that sound like nobody, keeps the result yours.
Paraphrasing, plagiarism and AI detection: the honest version.
Two claims are made about paraphrasing tools constantly, and both are wrong in ways that can cost somebody a grade. They are worth stating plainly.
Paraphrasing does not make something not plagiarism. Plagiarism is using someone else’s ideas or words without attribution. Rewording changes the words and leaves the ideas exactly where they were. A perfectly paraphrased passage from an uncited source is still plagiarism, and a plagiarism checker that misses it has not made it acceptable. Citation is a separate obligation and no amount of rephrasing discharges it.
Paraphrasing does not get text past an AI detector, and can worsen the position. Turnitin states directly that its AI writing report attempts to identify text that was generated and then run through a paraphrasing tool, naming that pattern as something it looks for. So the sequence people imagine as a solution is a documented target. Running an AI draft through a paraphraser can leave you flagged both as generated and as processed, which is worse than either alone.
There is also a quieter cost. Paraphrasing a whole document through any tool pulls it toward one neutral register, because that register is the average of everything the model read. Whatever was distinctive about your writing is the first thing to go, and it is the thing a reader actually valued.
Paraphrasing with and paraphrasing text from each assistant.
These queries cover two different jobs that get searched with the same words, and the sections below separate them.
ChatGPT paraphraser
Two different jobs share this query, and they need opposite things, so it is worth separating them.
The first is using ChatGPT itself to paraphrase, which works and has one reliable failure: ask it to reword a passage and it tends to lengthen. A request to rephrase comes back with an extra clause per sentence, a transition that was not there, and a closing line summarising what it just said. Asking for the same content in fewer words fixes more than asking for it in different words.
The second is paraphrasing something ChatGPT wrote, which is a harder problem, because what makes that text recognisable is structural. Rewording the sentences of a three-part answer produces a differently worded three-part answer. The shape is what needs to change, and rewording alone will not change it.
Claude paraphraser
Claude paraphrases more faithfully than the others, which is a genuine strength and produces a specific problem.
It preserves meaning carefully, including the hedging. Ask it to reword a qualified sentence and you get a differently worded qualified sentence, with the caveat intact and often a second one added. For a paraphrase intended to tighten something, that is the opposite of what was wanted.
Text paraphrased through it also arrives structured: bolded lead-ins, occasional bullets, headed sections inside a passage that was continuous prose. Paste that into a document and either the asterisks show or the shape of the page quietly changes.
LLaMA paraphraser
Quality varies more here than with any hosted assistant, and the reason is worth knowing before you trust a result.
LLaMA is weights rather than a product, so the paraphrase you get depends on which deployment served it, what system prompt sat in front of it, and how heavily the model was quantised. Smaller local deployments in particular drift on meaning: a name changes, a figure moves, a negation drops out.
That makes verification against the original more important with LLaMA output than with anything else on this page. It is capable of good paraphrasing and it is not consistently capable of it, which is a different risk from being consistently mediocre.
Perplexity paraphraser
Perplexity is built to answer with citations, which makes it an unusual choice for paraphrasing and creates a specific trap.
Ask it to reword a passage and it may search, then reword against what it found rather than against what you gave it. The result reads well and can quietly contain claims that were not in your source. That is the failure to watch for, because it does not look like an error.
Output also arrives built around citation markers. Strip those before pasting, as most people do, and you are left with sentences hedged toward a reference that is no longer in the document, which reads as evasive rather than as careful.
A free QuillBot alternative, and where QuillBot is still the better answer.
QuillBot is the tool most people in this category are actually comparing against, so the comparison is worth making honestly rather than by listing our own features and stopping.
Where QuillBot is ahead. Named modes you can switch between, a synonym slider that lets you dial how far the rewrite goes, and integrations into Word and Chrome so it reaches you where you write. If you paraphrase daily and want that control, it is a more featured product and pretending otherwise would not help you.
Where this is ahead. No account to start the scan, and no advertising between you and the result. And the paraphrase runs on a current general-purpose model rather than a purpose-built rewriter, which handles technical and academic passages more gracefully than a synonym-driven approach does.
Where neither helps. Both are frequently reached for by people trying to launder an AI draft past a detector, and Turnitin names that exact sequence as something it screens for. Neither tool solves that problem, and a page telling you otherwise is selling you something.
AI paraphraser and paraphrasing tool questions.
Is this AI paraphrasing tool free, and does it need a sign-up?
The scan is free on this page and you can start without an account; paraphrasing is on a paid plan. An account keeps your documents between visits, which matters for long pieces and not at all for rephrasing a paragraph.
What is the difference between paraphrasing and rewriting?
Paraphrasing keeps the meaning and changes the expression. Rewriting is free to change what is said: cut a point, add one, reorder the argument. If a fact, figure or claim differs between the original and the result, what you have is a rewrite, and it needs reading rather than accepting.
Is this a free QuillBot alternative?
For paraphrasing a document, yes. QuillBot is the better-known product and it is worth being straight about what it gives you: named modes, a synonym slider, and integrations into Word and Chrome. This is a page you paste into, with a free scan, paid paraphrasing and no advertising in the way. If you want modes and a browser integration, QuillBot is the more featured tool. If you want to rephrase a document now without installing anything, this does that.
Does paraphrasing avoid plagiarism?
Not by itself, and this is the most consequential misunderstanding about these tools. Reworded text still carries someone else's ideas, and using them without a citation is plagiarism regardless of how many words changed. Paraphrasing changes how you present a source. Citing it is a separate obligation that paraphrasing does not discharge.
Will paraphrasing get past an AI detector?
No, and it can make things worse. Turnitin states explicitly that its AI report attempts to identify text that was generated and then run through a paraphrasing tool, naming that pattern directly. Paraphrasing an AI draft can leave you with text flagged both as AI-written and as processed, which is a worse position than where you started.
Can I use a paraphrasing tool for academic work?
For your own writing, generally yes: rephrasing your own sentence for clarity is ordinary editing. For putting a source into your own words, be careful. Many institutions treat tool-generated paraphrase of source material as unauthorised assistance even when it is cited, and policies differ enough that the only reliable answer is your own institution's. That policy applies to the finished work whatever tool touched it.
Can it paraphrase ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and DeepSeek text?
Yes, and what you should expect is limited. Rewording AI text changes the vocabulary while leaving the structure that makes it recognisable: the even sentence lengths, the three-part shape, the summarising conclusion. If reading less like AI is the goal, paraphrasing is not the tool that does it.
Will it change my meaning?
It should not. Facts, figures, names, dates and quotations come through as written and the changes are to phrasing and structure. Read the result against the original anyway when something depends on it, because no tool understands your subject better than you do.
How is this different from a synonym or word spinner?
A spinner substitutes words and leaves the sentence standing. That produces text nobody would write, because near-synonyms are not synonyms, and it is obvious to any reader. Real paraphrasing reorders clauses, merges and splits sentences, and changes shape rather than surface.
Is my text stored?
The document is attached to your account so you can return to it, and you can delete it whenever you like. It is not used to train anything.
